  • Updates from HPNA Board

    Dear HPNA Neighbors and Businesses:

We hope this finds you and your families doing well during these challenging times. It has been wonderful to see so many neighbors helping others and organizing things for kids to do (flower hunt, egg hunt, chalk events, etc.). We are lucky to have such wonderful neighbors!

Although we are under quarantine due to COVID-19, your HPNA Board is still in full swing meeting via phone and Zoom to continue to work on various items and future events in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our quarterly meeting in March and will be canceling the June quarterly meeting as well. However, there is a possibility that June quarterly meeting will be held via Zoom so that we can provide you with interesting and important information.  More details to come! If you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like to provide the Board, we would love to hear from you.  Please email your suggestions or ideas info@hollywoodpark95822.org.

Also, if you have not yet renewed your HPNA annual household membership ($15), you may do so on-line. If you prefer to mail a check, please print and complete the attached membership application and mail to the address below.

If you are a business and would like to renew your HPNA annual membership ($30) which includes your business name/telephone number in the quarterly newsletter and/or if you would like to renew your business card ad ($110), you may do so by paying on-line or send your check and Business Membership Form to the address below. Larger ad sizes are available, as follows:

    • Quarter page $300
    • Half page $500
    • Full page $900.

If you are unsure whether or not you have renewed your membership for 2020, please feel free to contact Debbie Keller at ddtkeller@comcast.net.

Thank you, and stay safe neighbors!

  • Update from Sowing Solidarity Urban Farm

Update from Sowing Solidarity Urban Farm

The following is an update letter from our own Urban Farm. This content is provided as a replacement for the presentation scheduled for the Cancelled HPNA March General Meeting.

Update from Sowing Solidarity Urban Farm

The plants are thriving at the farm! Walk by the farm on 23rd Street at Anita Way and you may see Gina Anderson tending to the crops as usual, all while wearing a mask and following precautionary practices mandated by the coronavirus pandemic. A few brief notes from her about the state of the farm:

The “green crops” are coming in: kale, lettuce, and chard.

Because of the pandemic the farm must adjust to a new model at this time. Bags of green produce will be for sale on a pre order basis for $10. Check the website at www.sowingsolidarity.org or email sowingsolidarity@gmail.com for information on availability, orders, payment, and pick-up options.

One goal this year is to support the South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership Food Bank located near the corner of 24th Street and Fruitridge Road. Contact information for donations and/or volunteering is ssipfc1@att.net or call (916)428-5290.

Gina thanks all for the support and patience shown while the farm adjusts to meet the restrictions resulting from the current health crisis.

  • Update letter from Freeport Blvd Transportation Safety Committee

The following is an update letter from the Chair of the Freeport Blvd. Transportation Safety Committee. This content is provided as a replacement for the presentation scheduled for the Cancelled HPNA March General Meeting.

    Greetings, neighbors:

We hope you are all coping as best as possible with the changes thrust upon us during these unprecedented times. As a silver lining to all of this, it seems at least in my observations, more and more of our neighbors are out walking and vehicle travel has been drastically reduced. It seems as if its a good time to reflect on how our roads might better serve us as not only drivers, but as walkers and bicyclists. The world will be changing in ways we can’t even begin to imagine, but as it does we must do our best to imagine and create the changes we want for our own community.

With that, we are super happy to release the final version of the Freeport Boulevard Walk Audit Report (click on link here to download). This report includes a description of the May 2019 walk audit and the findings and recommendations of WalkSacramento based on the community input from that event. In addition, the report also includes a summary of the findings from the Freeport Blvd. Transportation Survey. Special thanks goes out to all of you who could attend the walk audit and to all of the FBTSC members that attended meetings and were able to assist in developing and analyzing the survey and reviewing and editing the report.

A draft of the walk audit report, along with a plethora of letters from many of you, was submitted by the city as part of an grant application to seek funding to study, among other areas, the Freeport Blvd. commercial corridor from Sutterville Road to Blair Avenue to develop a transportation plan focusing on safety, mobility, and access along the corridor.

We are expecting to hear back about whether the city is awarded the grant sometime this spring. We’ll keep you all posted. Also, as soon as we are all feeling comfortable and safe enough to have public meetings, I hope to present the walk audit report to our neighborhood associations.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

  • Raley’s New Store Opening in Land Park

Raley’s New Store Opening in Land Park

Raley’s has shared the following information regarding the opening of the new store on Freeport Boulevard with HPNA.

Raley’s is set to open our new location in Land Park on Wednesday, April 15th.

Given the realities of COVID-19, this opening will not include any traditional celebration. But we do plan on properly celebrating with the community at a later date.

We ask that customers abide by the shelter-in-home mandate and only come to the store when they need food and essential items. If you do come to the new store, be aware of the following safeguards:

    • We have added new signage to help guide customers on where to gather in line at common areas like the check-stands, coffee bar, meat counter and pharmacy.
    • We have also included signage to enforce social distancing, including marks on the floor.
    • We will be monitoring the number of people in store and if needed, will limit the number of customers in at any given time.
    • While the shelves are fully stocked, we will limit the number of products to a maximum of two items per family per visit, on the following products: milk, eggs, water, fresh packaged chicken and paper products.
    • The new store will have Raley’s eCart curbside and delivery options available. The new curbside pick-up is located on the north side of the store and includes covered parking spots. You can order online at www.raleys.com/shop.

*PLEASE NOTE: no other retailers/stores in the Park will be open as of 4/15.

Both stores will be open for a few days

The old store will close on Saturday, April 18th at 7pm.

All items in the old store will be discounted as of April 15th.

    Plans for the old store

    • It was our intent to share a new tenant as a part of our opening. Given the COVID-19 outbreak, our lease agreement with a new tenant has been put on hold.
    • Our new plan, given the additional time, is to prepare the store for a new tenant.
    • This includes clearing inventory and fixtures, cleaning up the building and making necessary repairs.
    • We hope to resume negotiation talks, post COVID-19.
    • The old store will be secured with new fencing, lighting and security as needed.

  • Proposed Marijuana Cultivation Businesses on 24th Street: Hear from the Developers at June 21 HPNA General Meeting

UPDATE: Notes compiled by HPNA at the meeting are now posted at the bottom of this post.

Two different businesses (Paradigm Farms and Prime Strategies LLC) have submitted applications to legalize commercial marijuana cultivation at two locations on 24th Street. The applicants will attend the June HPNA General Meeting to present their projects and answer questions. Please review the materials about the proposals that are posted on this site and bring your questions and comments to the meeting.  The June 21 meeting will begin at 6:30pm, with social time and refreshments at 6:00.

The proposed businesses would be located at 4701 24th Street (Paradigm Farms, CUP Z17-063) and 4080 24th Street (Prime Strategies, CUP Z17-046). The applications submitted to the City of Sacramento are requests for a conditional use permit for eventual commercial marijuana cultivation. At 4080 24th St., the property owners do not plan to operate the cultivation business and there is currently no tenant for the space.  At 4080 24th St., the grower would be Paradigm Farms. The proposals are to use the existing buildings, not for new construction. The properties are zoned as light industrial (4701 24th St.) and heavy commercial (4080 24th St.).

In addition, we are aware of two other proposed commercial marijuana cultivation businesses that have submitted permit applications around our neighborhood. There may be more that are submitted before the City’s June 30 permit application deadline for marijuana cultivation businesses. One is located at 3752 W. Pacific Avenue (CUP Z17-049) and we have attached the materials from the City for that project as well. The other is located at 6400 Freeport Blvd. and we do not have any materials to share for that project.

Representatives for the two 24th Street projects presented at the HPNA General Meeting on June 21.  Their materials are posted below.

The HPNA Board plans to submit a comment letter regarding these applications and anyone is free to submit their own comment letter. We look forward to hearing your opinions and comments on the two proposed business developments in our neighborhood, either at the meeting or by email to hpna95822@gmail.com. The HPNA Board plans to submit a comment letter to the City no later than June 28.  The developers will also be attending the HPNA Board meeting on June 12 at 7:00 p.m. to present about their projects.

  • Harvest Hollywood Park

    By Christina Maradik-Symkowick
Have an over abundant citrus tree with excess ending up on your lawn, then the yard waste bin? Or unable to harvest your citrus tree? Or excited to help your Hollywood Park neighbor harvest a fruit tree? Lets make an effort not to let all that wonderful citrus go to waste this winter! Mark your calendar to come out and join your neighbors in our annual Hollywood Park neighborhood harvest, and to welcome the Land Park Community Association into the fold. We will meet at Centennial United Methodist Church in the morning for coffee and some nourishing treats and fan out through the neighborhood to harvest citrus trees. Afterward, we will return to the church to enjoy a hearty vegetarian lunch and share stories. We’ll set our fruit out for the taking by anyone who will use it and donate the rest to local food banks.
Harvest Hollywood Park, a neighborhood affiliate of Harvest Sacramento, a project of Soil Born Farms, is focused on redistributing the bounty of the neighborhood to those neighbors that will use it and donating the rest to those without enough food in our greater Sacramento community. If you would like to join one of Harvest Sacramento’s larger city-wide picks, please visit soilborn.org and click the volunteer button for more information.

  • Make Your Voice Heard: New Raley’s Store & Shopping Center Project Will Be Voted on By City Council at 11/22 Meeting

    MoiseH
    Hilary Moise (HPNA Board Member)

    By Hilary Moise

The project is called “The Park” and will include a 55,000 square-foot Raley’s store and six smaller buildings for retail stores and restaurants.  The proposal includes changes to Freeport Boulevard to create an entrance/exit into the shopping center and a new traffic signal at Meer Way and Freeport.  HPNA has a web page with current updates on the project, which can be found at: https://hpnadev.hollywoodpark95822.org/raleys-project-info/.

The City Planning Commission voted 12-1 to approve the project at its October 20 meeting, after three hours of comment by the project developers and local residents speaking both for and against the project.  HPNA President John Maradik-Symkowick spoke at the meeting to present HPNA’s position of suppoting the project with some recommended changes. The recommendations were that the buildings on Freeport Blvd. should be re-oriented to face and open up to the street and sidewalk, bicycle and pedestrian safety and access should be improved with wider sidewalks and a passenger loading zone, and the bus stop in front of the current Raley’s should be moved to the new shopping center location.  Read the full HPNA comment letter to the Planning Commission on our website: https://hpnadev.hollywoodpark95822.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/HPNA-The-Park-P15-048-10.19.16.pdf.

Now, the last step for the project to be approved is a vote by the City Council.  The project proposal will be considered and voted on by the City Council on Tuesday, November 22 at 6:00pm.  Any Hollywood Park residents who want to share their opinions for or against the project can comment by attending the meeting or by submitting a written comment to the Assistant City Clerk before November 22.  More information on City Council meetings, agendas, and public participation is at: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/Clerk/Meetings-and-Agendas.

HPNA will provide plates/napkins/utensils and is also arranging some festive additions like live music and holiday decorations. With your help this will be a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to get together!
