Hawaiian music, corn hole tossing, and visits from police officers and elected officials took place at a National Night Out on Tuesday August 3rd. Centennial United Methodist Church hosted the event in their grassy and tree-shaded courtyard at the corner of Freeport Blvd. and Murieta Way. Organizers encouraged both neighbors and church members to mingle and visit information booths about the local food bank and the church and get bites of watermelon, ice cream and cookies. A “passport” noting a visit to all the arranged stops merited a goody bag upon departing the event.

“This was our first National Night Out, and we hope to do it again,” said Gerlene Kwan, who is part of the outreach team at the Church. “It gives a sense of community, getting to know each other and helping improve the community” She estimates there were 60-70 people who came out between 6:00 to 8:00pm on that 100-degree evening.

Three police officers from the local station at Franklin Blvd. near Fruitridge Blvd. paid a visit and mingled with the crowd who were enjoying snacks and the sounds of KaBang, a ukulele & guitar quartet.

City Council Member Jay Schenirer (District 5) and County Representative Patrick Kennedy were on hand with staff members to give updates on district happenings and answer residents’ questions.

  • National Night Out 2016

NNO SliderNational Night Out (NNO) is Tuesday, August 2nd this year and we can’t wait to get out in our neighborhood and meet all of our fabulous neighbors.

What is NNO you ask?! National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. The National Night Out program culminates annually on the first Tuesday of August and neighbors participate across thousands of communities from all 50 states. Of course Hollywood Park is proud to be a part of this annual tradition.

Every year we put together a map of homes that volunteer in the neighborhood to be “open” or host homes in our community. For people that aren’t hosting you are encouraged to stroll the neighborhood, chat with neighbors you already know and meet new ones in the spirit of NNO. Basically it is a strolling  neighborhood party hop!

In the past some host homes have offered strolling neighbors a tasty treat; such as a root beer float, pulled pork sliders, ice cream, lemonade/refreshments to name a few. Hosts are not obligated to provide anything other than friendliness, but of course the amazing people of our Hollywood Park never cease to amaze us with their generosity!

Be sure to mark your calendars for August 2nd this Summer to meet all the fantastic people out and about for National Night Out!

If you would like to be a host house this year please email hpna95822@gamil.com to be added to the NNO map.

  • National Night Out – August 6th

This year’s National Night Out marks the 30th anniversary of this great event, celebrating America’s Night Out Against Crime. In Hollywood Park, we like to honor this night by having host parties throughout the neighborhood to get people to come outside, meet their neighbors and build a sense of community.

We encourage you all to head out and visit your nearby host location. Or take a bike ride and visit a some of the other locations. Each host site offers refreshments, free mosquito repellant (thank you Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito Vector Control District!) and a chance for great conversations. One of our locations this year is the HP Produce Exchange on Salvator Way. See what’s producing in the neighborhood!

    Check out the map!
