  • City Needs Your Input for Transportation Planning on Freeport Blvd.

City Needs Your Input for Transportation Planning on Freeport Blvd.

The City of Sacramento will host four community workshops to take a deeper look at ways to improve safety, walkability, and the overall experience for users in two major transportation corridors.

Northgate Boulevard in the north and Freeport Boulevard in the southern portion of the City are heavily traveled upon by motorists, walkers, cyclists and other active transportation users. Each corridor has its fair share of opportunities and challenges, and the City wants input from those who use them often and live on and around them.

“I am very excited to hear from the people who use Freeport Boulevard to learn more about what can be done to make the street better for everyone,” said Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Freeport Plan, Drew Hart, . “When we engage with the community early and often, the design concepts we arrive at are more effective and representative of what the people truly need.”

Over the coming weeks and months, City staff and a support group of experts will reach out and engage with multiple stakeholders across the two project areas through one-on-one conversations, in-person pop-up events, virtual workshops, and online surveys. After an assessment of current conditions, listening sessions, and the collection of community feedback, residents will have the chance to preview potential design alternatives and weigh in on the future of these corridors.

It’s essential to us to make sure to give everyone the opportunity to share their input in a time and manner that’s convenient to them.

Leslie Mancebo, Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Northgate Plan

“I’m hoping to get feedback from area residents who might have never participated in a transportation plan before, said Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Northgate Plan, Leslie Mancebo. “It’s essential to us to make sure to give everyone the opportunity to share their input in a time and manner that’s convenient to them.”

Residents can register for the virtual workshops online. The walking workshops will each be approximately 1.5 miles to observe challenges and opportunities for improvement firsthand.

  • Centennial United Methodist Church Hosts National Night Out Event

Centennial United Methodist Church Hosts National Night Out Event

by Julie Scheff, photos by Ralph McDaniel

Hawaiian music, corn hole tossing, and visits from police officers and elected officials took place at a National Night Out on Tuesday August 3rd. Centennial United Methodist Church hosted the event in their grassy and tree-shaded courtyard at the corner of Freeport Blvd. and Murieta Way. Organizers encouraged both neighbors and church members to mingle and visit information booths about the local food bank and the church and get bites of watermelon, ice cream and cookies. A “passport” noting a visit to all the arranged stops merited a goody bag upon departing the event.

“This was our first National Night Out, and we hope to do it again,” said Gerlene Kwan, who is part of the outreach team at the Church. “It gives a sense of community, getting to know each other and helping improve the community” She estimates there were 60-70 people who came out between 6:00 to 8:00pm on that 100-degree evening.

Three police officers from the local station at Franklin Blvd. near Fruitridge Blvd. paid a visit and mingled with the crowd who were enjoying snacks and the sounds of KaBang, a ukulele & guitar quartet.

Music for the National Night Out crowd was provided by Hawaiin music quarter KaBang!

City Council Member Jay Schenirer (District 5) and County Representative Patrick Kennedy were on hand with staff members to give updates on district happenings and answer residents’ questions.

    Practice Safety During the Holidays

We are in November and the holidays are approaching quickly. Here are some tips to help protect you and your property during this time of the year.

    Vehicle Safety

    • Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle
    • Don’t leave your vehicle running and unattended
    • Be alert and look around your car before entering it
    • Park in well-lit areas or under lamp posts at night
    • Make sure all of your vehicle doors are locked before you park
    • If your vehicle is equipped with an alarm system, be sure to activate it when you park

    Personal Safety

    • Carry a cell phone with you and report suspicious behavior to our police department. Our non-emergency number is (916) 808-5471. For emergencies, call 911 immediately
    • Be alert and avoid displaying or carrying large sums of money
    • Use a credit card to purchase items and keep a record of all card numbers at home
    • Beware of strangers approaching you. Thieves may try to distract you with the intention of taking your valuables
    • Don’t carry anything in your purse that you can’t afford to lose

    Delivery Safety

    • Schedule deliveries when someone is home to receive the package
    • Use tracking numbers and email/text notifications to closely monitor when packages arrive
    • Have packages delivered to a workplace or apartment lobby where someone can sign for it
    • Connect with neighbors, friends and family members to make arrangements to sign for and receive packages
    • Be a vigilant neighbor. Report all suspicious activity, including any strangers potentially casing in your neighborhood

    Online Safety

    • Only shop on trusted websites
    • Don’t click links in emails.  Identity thieves are creating emails that look like they are from trusted companies, but clicking links may infect your computer with malware or give the thieves access to passwords
    • Be sure to keep everything including passwords and computer software up to date
    • To keep your bank account safe, use credit or prepaid cards to purchase items

  • We Will Never Be the Same

We Will Never Be the Same

From the Office of Councilmember Jay Schenirer

“Unprecedented” is generally the word that folks use to describe our current situation – as a community, city, country and world. My hope, our hope, is that we are through the worst, are adjusting to this new world, and will come out of this stronger than when it began. Without a doubt, we have a very long way to go. As we emerge, however, I think it is important that we stop to take stock, see what we’ve learned, and have a thoughtful discussion about what we want to hold on to as we figure out the new normal.

Here are some thoughts to begin the conversation.

First, the challenge of COVID 19 has confirmed, over and over again, what a wonderful community we live in. I have always said that when challenged, Sacramentans always step up. This time has been no different. Our Donate4Sacramento response fund has to date generated nearly $1.3 million dollars from over 1,300 donors. Organizations have shown tremendous leadership in helping support individuals and their families who are in need. Time and again, we hear stories of individuals and organizations going above and beyond to pitch in and help.

Second, our city, under the leadership of Mayor Steinberg and City Manager Howard Chan, is working hard to meet the challenges before us. At the City, our employees, across the board, have also stepped up to continue vital city services. Despite over 1,700 of our employees working remotely, the City continues to move forward with our budget challenges and making decisions about the federal stimulus money we received. I know that our management team will work collaboratively with the council to coninue working towards our goals of investing in our most at-risk neighborhoods, finding solutions for our unsheltered population, supporting our youth, and meeting many, many needs of those we represent. I also want to acknowledge and thank all of our front-line folks – those who protect us and keep our city running.

Third, we will be different. Sacramento has always been a model community, on the forefront of social and economic issues. By the time this is over, every one of us will be impacted. I don’t believe we yet have a concept of the depth of the damage to our way of life, both socially and economically. But I do hope that we find some silver lining. More folks are out of their cars and in our parks. Our relationships with each other, while mostly on zoom, have hopefully been enhanced. Our empathy for those who have suffered the most has increased. What I fervently hope is that our caring for one another will continue to grow, and we will base our future decisions on the collective good, whether it is around the environment, transportation, the unsheltered, or our young people. Let’s keep looking forward to making our community and city exactly the place where we want to raise our children and grandchildren. Be safe, be healthy and look out for one another. -Jay
