  • September 2025 Updates

    Greetings Neighbors!

Welcome to Fall! We all hope that you’ve had a lovely end to your summer—perhaps some of you were able to join us for the summer movie night last Friday—and you’re getting into the regular rhythm of life that this time of year brings.

Your HPNA Board wants to share some of that time with you at our upcoming events and opportunities; read on to learn more!

Community Forum on Homelessness on September 17

First, we are hosting a Community Forum on Homelessness, on Wednesday, September 17 at Hollywood Park Elementary. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; forum is from 7-8:30 p.m. Panelists include representatives from City of Sacramento Department of Community Response; Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing; Sacramento Steps Forward; and SCUSD Homeless Student Services (invited).

Space is somewhat limited, so please click on this link to RSVP and to submit any questions that you may have for the panelists.

Hollywood Park Mega Yard Sale on October 4

It’s time to put words into action: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!” The annual Hollywood Park Mega Yard Sale is the first Saturday in October (10/4). Take advantage of this opportunity to have folks come from all around to meet your neighbors and get rid of some stuff! Although this isn’t an officially-sponsored HPNA event, if you would like your garage sale on a map, please email 920sac@gmail.com no later than 10/2 with the words GARAGE SALE in the subject line. HPNA will post the map on our social media pages as well as on our website.

    OktoberFest on October 4

Also on October 4 is HPNA’s first annual OktoberFest from 12-4 at Fountainhead Brewing (4621 24th Street). After working your garage sale (or walking to other sales!), come relax and grab a pint of Hollywood Park’s very own brewery! Fountainhead is generously donating $1 per pint to HPNA (thank you, Fountainhead!), so come on over to enjoy the afternoon in one of the gems of our neighborhood.

    **********************************************************************************

Join the HPNA Board of Directors!

If you would like to be part of making community events and advocacy happen for our neighborhood, consider joining the HPNA Board! We are a fun group of passionate neighbors from the Hollywood Park and Carleton Tract neighborhoods who work together to find solutions and say YES to making things happen! If you would like your name on the ballot, you must submit a 100-150 Candidate Statement to hpna95822@gmail.com no later than October 17, 2025. Statements will be published in the next Hollywood Herald Newsletter. Elections will be held in person at the December Community Meeting; candidates must be dues-paying members of HPNA, and must attend the December meeting in person to introduce yourself to attendees before the vote.

Any questions about the commitment? Contact any Board member to chat!

Finally, the Resident Survey: A Park for Hollywood Park is still open! Councilmember Caity Maple is working on a plan to bring a new community park to the neighborhood, and we need your input.

To fund the park’s ongoing development and maintenance, we’re exploring the creation of a Community Facilities District (CFD) — a voter-approved funding mechanism where neighbors pay a small monthly to support local improvements. In this case, the CFD would ensure the park stays clean, safe, and well-maintained throughout its existence.

Because a CFD requires strong neighborhood support, we’re conducting this short survey to hear from you. Your feedback will help shape the project and determine whether we move forward. If you haven’t yet already completed the survey, please take five minutes to complete the survey; you can access it here, or by going to the QR code on the flyer below (also attached to this email).

Your HPNA Board will be meeting on Thursday, October 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Belle Cooledge Library  (5600 S. Land Park Drive); we will also be streaming this meeting. If you would like to join us, or if you have anything that you would like the Board to know about or discuss, please email hpna95822@gmail.com to submit your suggestions. We hope to see you there!

Finally, the HPNA can only do good things for our community with neighbor support, both through service and financial. We want to thank the incredible volunteers that have donated their talent and time to all of the events that we’ve enjoyed this year! If you’d like to help the HPNA bring good things to your neighbors, either once or on-going, simply reply to this email! If you’d like to become a dues-paying member of the HPNA ($20 for a 12-month membership), please take five minutes to do so by clicking this link or using the QR code below. Thank you!

We look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

  • June 2025 Updates

    Greetings Neighbors!

By now, school is out for the summer and the heat is here. I hope that you’re ready to celebrate time with friends and family during any free time that you may have this summer, including joining the HPNA for our first annual “HP Summer Fest” happening this coming Saturday, June 21 from 11-3 at Two Rivers Cider Company (4311 Attawa Avenue). We will be selling hot dogs (vegetarian option, too!)–with a discount to HPNA paying members–and Two Rivers will be selling drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic + kid drinks, to anyone who would like! Meet your neighbors, hear live music, kids can enjoy the kids’ play area, and just hang out for awhile. We will have a bike valet area for folks who are biking, too, so it’s nice and easy! While this event is free, it is helpful to us to know how many folks are coming, so please either RSVP using the QR code on the attached flyer, or reply to this email. It’s okay to show up without having RSVP’ed, too.

After Summer Fest, please join your neighbors for the Hollywood Park July 4th parade! This annual community event (not sponsored by the HPNA) will meet in the front parking lot of LdV. Please consider volunteering to help this be fun for everyone!

Neighborhood and City News and Updates

Also, we wanted to make you aware of a change in leadership at the South Sac Command post for the SacPD; please see the attached notice from our new Captain Jeffrey Shiraishi, who introduces new staff, including our new Lieutenant Cunningham

SacRT is hosting a “Transit Idea Exchange” on June 25.

Take a look at the attached newsletter as well (BIG THANKS to Supervisor Patrick Kennedy for his financial support of the newsletter!). If you would like to write a short, neighborhood-related article, please contact us!

Your HPNA Board will be meeting via Zoom on Thursday, July 10, with a start time of 6:30 p.m. If you would like to join us, or if you have anything that you would like the Board to know about or discuss, please email hpna95822@gmail.com to submit your suggestions. We would be honored to have you!

Have a wonderful first month of summer, neighbors! We all look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

The Hollywood Park and Carlton Tract Neighborhood Association would like to wish you and your family a Happy Fourth of July!

A Few Things About Saturday the 4th of July:

    • The organizers of the Traditional 4th of July Parade have have informed HPNA that they have CANCELLED the parade for safety reasons.* So, no parade this year, but they plan to be back again next year.
    • Mason the antique firetruck will be driving around the neighborhood spreading 4th of July cheer!
    • We encourage everyone to spend some time sitting out in your front yard to try to catch Mason driving by or neighbors walking their dogs (or anyone else for that matter) to wave, hoot, and holler!

Enjoy a safe and fun holiday!

  • Updates from HPNA Board

    Dear HPNA Neighbors and Businesses:

We hope this finds you and your families doing well during these challenging times. It has been wonderful to see so many neighbors helping others and organizing things for kids to do (flower hunt, egg hunt, chalk events, etc.). We are lucky to have such wonderful neighbors!

Although we are under quarantine due to COVID-19, your HPNA Board is still in full swing meeting via phone and Zoom to continue to work on various items and future events in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our quarterly meeting in March and will be canceling the June quarterly meeting as well. However, there is a possibility that June quarterly meeting will be held via Zoom so that we can provide you with interesting and important information.  More details to come! If you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like to provide the Board, we would love to hear from you.  Please email your suggestions or ideas info@hollywoodpark95822.org.

Also, if you have not yet renewed your HPNA annual household membership ($15), you may do so on-line. If you prefer to mail a check, please print and complete the attached membership application and mail to the address below.

If you are a business and would like to renew your HPNA annual membership ($30) which includes your business name/telephone number in the quarterly newsletter and/or if you would like to renew your business card ad ($110), you may do so by paying on-line or send your check and Business Membership Form to the address below. Larger ad sizes are available, as follows:

    • Quarter page $300
    • Half page $500
    • Full page $900.

If you are unsure whether or not you have renewed your membership for 2020, please feel free to contact Debbie Keller at ddtkeller@comcast.net.

Thank you, and stay safe neighbors!

  • 2015 President’s Annual Report

    Dear Members,

This past year has been especially eventful for the Hollywood Park Neighborhood Association. Perhaps most significantly, the HPNA made substantial progress on the neighborhood sign project begun in 2014. The HPNA board chose an accomplished local artist and fabricator, Casey Marshall, and three sign designs that the membership narrowed down to one final sign design at the September 2015 general meeting. This iconic sign, which is as much a public art installation as it is a traditional sign, will be sure to make Hollywood Park a place everyone in Sacramento will know about. Although funds have been promised from City Councilmember Jay Schenirer and County Supervisor Patrick Kennedy, the HPNA will raise additional funds before construction begins. Once the board approves a detailed proposal for the project, fundraising efforts will kick into high gear. For more information on the sign project, please visit our web site at hollywoodpark.org.
Among other HPNA firsts, we kicked off the year with a huge citrus harvest event in partnership with Soil Born Farms’ Harvest Sacramento, Harvest Hollywood Park and Centennial United Methodist Church. Over 100 volunteers from all of Sacramento came to Hollywood Park to pick over 3,000 pounds of citrus. The next Hollywood Park Neighborhood Harvest will be held once again at Centennial United Methodist Church on Freeport Blvd. at 9AM on February 20, 2016. To sign up contact Christina Maradik-Symkowick at harvesthollywoodpark@gmail.com or 916-524-2754.

We also made a foray into city planning by sending comment letters to do the following:
    • Encouraging trees and sidewalks to be installed as part of the Soccer Planet parking lot project.
    • Supporting North Franklin Business District grant applications to study Franklin Blvd. improvements.
    • Opposing the fuel center for the Curtis Village development.
    • Requesting that the storefronts for the new Raley’s / Land Park Commercial Center project be re-oriented towards the street.
    • Requesting that the Environmental Impact Report for the Raley’s / Land Park Commercial Center project include a traffic / pedestrian / bicycle safety study.

We continued to coordinate quarterly neighborhood meetings with interesting speakers and topics. Some examples include the following:

    • Jay Schenirer, Hollywood Park’s City Councilmember.
    • Patrick Kennedy, Hollywood Park’s County Supervisor.
    • Tenley Luke, Principal, Hollywood Park Elementary School.
    • Captain Dave Peletta of the Sacramento Police Department to discuss crime and safety.
    • Marti Brown of the North Franklin Business District to discuss a potential traffic lane diet for Franklin Blvd. and 24th Street.
    • Dominic Allamano of Soil Born Farms to discuss ways to make the most of our urban food sources.
    • The Raley’s development team to discuss the plans for the new Raley’s / Land Park Commercial Center on Freeport Blvd.
    • Bill Busath, Director of the City of Sacramento’s Department of Utilities, to discuss the departments infrastructure needs and proposed rate hikes.

The HPNA coordinated several wonderful events. Once again, Hollywood Park had a wildly successful 4th of July parade with the addition of volunteers stationed at neighborhood intersections to ensure the safety of all those bike-riding kids following Hollywood Park resident Wally Clark’s fire truck. In September, the HPNA coordinated the annual Hollywood Park Ice Cream Social and Movie Night with several new volunteers and neighbor-supplied side dishes and salads. Special thanks go out to City Councilmember Jay Schenirer for providing the movie, Big Hero 6, and popcorn. The HPNA also coordinated three successful neighborhood cleanup days in partnership with Eleakis and Elder Photography, Sutter Bicycle Company, and the Jointed Cue. And, the mega yard sale was once again a huge success!

The HPNA worked with City Councilmember Schenirer’s office and the Sacramento Police Department to successfully convince squatters to leave two neighborhood residences. While Hollywood Park remains an incredibly safe neighborhood, the HPNA’s own efforts to coordinate neighbors to address crime and safety has had its own fits and starts in 2015. A neighborhood watch meeting was coordinated by neighbors in the spring and in an effort to encourage block-based neighborhood watch groups to form, the HPNA board voted to provide micro-grants to any neighbors that formed such groups. However, no such groups came forward. The HPNA board then voted in December for the resurrected HPNA Safety Committee to coordinate a Hollywood Park Community Watch Program and to use the grant money for the purchase of materials to help facilitate the program. Look for more from the Community Watch Program in 2016.

The HPNA successfully published four neighborhood newsletters and volunteers delivered them to 1,500 residences throughout the neighborhood. The HPNA emailed monthly updates and added new content to the web site, including multiple blog posts, a sign project section, financial reports, and meeting agendas. The ever vibrant Neighborhood Improvement Committee coordinated mistletoe abatement and tree-planting canvassing efforts as well as the Holiday Bow Project and the Holiday Decorating Contest. The Business Committee signed on so many new business members and sold so many ads for the newsletter that there is no more room to add any more.
Finally, an annual report would not be complete without thanking all of you for your continued support. Without the volunteers and members of the HPNA, none of this could have occurred.
Thank you and happy new year!
    John Maradik-Symkowick
