  • September 2025 Updates

    Greetings Neighbors!

Welcome to Fall! We all hope that you’ve had a lovely end to your summer—perhaps some of you were able to join us for the summer movie night last Friday—and you’re getting into the regular rhythm of life that this time of year brings.

Your HPNA Board wants to share some of that time with you at our upcoming events and opportunities; read on to learn more!

Community Forum on Homelessness on September 17

First, we are hosting a Community Forum on Homelessness, on Wednesday, September 17 at Hollywood Park Elementary. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; forum is from 7-8:30 p.m. Panelists include representatives from City of Sacramento Department of Community Response; Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing; Sacramento Steps Forward; and SCUSD Homeless Student Services (invited).

Space is somewhat limited, so please click on this link to RSVP and to submit any questions that you may have for the panelists.

Hollywood Park Mega Yard Sale on October 4

It’s time to put words into action: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!” The annual Hollywood Park Mega Yard Sale is the first Saturday in October (10/4). Take advantage of this opportunity to have folks come from all around to meet your neighbors and get rid of some stuff! Although this isn’t an officially-sponsored HPNA event, if you would like your garage sale on a map, please email 920sac@gmail.com no later than 10/2 with the words GARAGE SALE in the subject line. HPNA will post the map on our social media pages as well as on our website.

    OktoberFest on October 4

Also on October 4 is HPNA’s first annual OktoberFest from 12-4 at Fountainhead Brewing (4621 24th Street). After working your garage sale (or walking to other sales!), come relax and grab a pint of Hollywood Park’s very own brewery! Fountainhead is generously donating $1 per pint to HPNA (thank you, Fountainhead!), so come on over to enjoy the afternoon in one of the gems of our neighborhood.

    **********************************************************************************

Join the HPNA Board of Directors!

If you would like to be part of making community events and advocacy happen for our neighborhood, consider joining the HPNA Board! We are a fun group of passionate neighbors from the Hollywood Park and Carleton Tract neighborhoods who work together to find solutions and say YES to making things happen! If you would like your name on the ballot, you must submit a 100-150 Candidate Statement to hpna95822@gmail.com no later than October 17, 2025. Statements will be published in the next Hollywood Herald Newsletter. Elections will be held in person at the December Community Meeting; candidates must be dues-paying members of HPNA, and must attend the December meeting in person to introduce yourself to attendees before the vote.

Any questions about the commitment? Contact any Board member to chat!

Finally, the Resident Survey: A Park for Hollywood Park is still open! Councilmember Caity Maple is working on a plan to bring a new community park to the neighborhood, and we need your input.

To fund the park’s ongoing development and maintenance, we’re exploring the creation of a Community Facilities District (CFD) — a voter-approved funding mechanism where neighbors pay a small monthly to support local improvements. In this case, the CFD would ensure the park stays clean, safe, and well-maintained throughout its existence.

Because a CFD requires strong neighborhood support, we’re conducting this short survey to hear from you. Your feedback will help shape the project and determine whether we move forward. If you haven’t yet already completed the survey, please take five minutes to complete the survey; you can access it here, or by going to the QR code on the flyer below (also attached to this email).

Your HPNA Board will be meeting on Thursday, October 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Belle Cooledge Library  (5600 S. Land Park Drive); we will also be streaming this meeting. If you would like to join us, or if you have anything that you would like the Board to know about or discuss, please email hpna95822@gmail.com to submit your suggestions. We hope to see you there!

Finally, the HPNA can only do good things for our community with neighbor support, both through service and financial. We want to thank the incredible volunteers that have donated their talent and time to all of the events that we’ve enjoyed this year! If you’d like to help the HPNA bring good things to your neighbors, either once or on-going, simply reply to this email! If you’d like to become a dues-paying member of the HPNA ($20 for a 12-month membership), please take five minutes to do so by clicking this link or using the QR code below. Thank you!

We look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

  • June 2025 Updates

    Greetings Neighbors!

By now, school is out for the summer and the heat is here. I hope that you’re ready to celebrate time with friends and family during any free time that you may have this summer, including joining the HPNA for our first annual “HP Summer Fest” happening this coming Saturday, June 21 from 11-3 at Two Rivers Cider Company (4311 Attawa Avenue). We will be selling hot dogs (vegetarian option, too!)–with a discount to HPNA paying members–and Two Rivers will be selling drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic + kid drinks, to anyone who would like! Meet your neighbors, hear live music, kids can enjoy the kids’ play area, and just hang out for awhile. We will have a bike valet area for folks who are biking, too, so it’s nice and easy! While this event is free, it is helpful to us to know how many folks are coming, so please either RSVP using the QR code on the attached flyer, or reply to this email. It’s okay to show up without having RSVP’ed, too.

After Summer Fest, please join your neighbors for the Hollywood Park July 4th parade! This annual community event (not sponsored by the HPNA) will meet in the front parking lot of LdV. Please consider volunteering to help this be fun for everyone!

Neighborhood and City News and Updates

Also, we wanted to make you aware of a change in leadership at the South Sac Command post for the SacPD; please see the attached notice from our new Captain Jeffrey Shiraishi, who introduces new staff, including our new Lieutenant Cunningham

SacRT is hosting a “Transit Idea Exchange” on June 25.

Take a look at the attached newsletter as well (BIG THANKS to Supervisor Patrick Kennedy for his financial support of the newsletter!). If you would like to write a short, neighborhood-related article, please contact us!

Your HPNA Board will be meeting via Zoom on Thursday, July 10, with a start time of 6:30 p.m. If you would like to join us, or if you have anything that you would like the Board to know about or discuss, please email hpna95822@gmail.com to submit your suggestions. We would be honored to have you!

Have a wonderful first month of summer, neighbors! We all look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

  • City Needs Your Input for Transportation Planning on Freeport Blvd.

City Needs Your Input for Transportation Planning on Freeport Blvd.

The City of Sacramento will host four community workshops to take a deeper look at ways to improve safety, walkability, and the overall experience for users in two major transportation corridors.

Northgate Boulevard in the north and Freeport Boulevard in the southern portion of the City are heavily traveled upon by motorists, walkers, cyclists and other active transportation users. Each corridor has its fair share of opportunities and challenges, and the City wants input from those who use them often and live on and around them.

“I am very excited to hear from the people who use Freeport Boulevard to learn more about what can be done to make the street better for everyone,” said Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Freeport Plan, Drew Hart, . “When we engage with the community early and often, the design concepts we arrive at are more effective and representative of what the people truly need.”

Over the coming weeks and months, City staff and a support group of experts will reach out and engage with multiple stakeholders across the two project areas through one-on-one conversations, in-person pop-up events, virtual workshops, and online surveys. After an assessment of current conditions, listening sessions, and the collection of community feedback, residents will have the chance to preview potential design alternatives and weigh in on the future of these corridors.

It’s essential to us to make sure to give everyone the opportunity to share their input in a time and manner that’s convenient to them.

Leslie Mancebo, Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Northgate Plan

“I’m hoping to get feedback from area residents who might have never participated in a transportation plan before, said Transportation Planner and Project Lead for the Northgate Plan, Leslie Mancebo. “It’s essential to us to make sure to give everyone the opportunity to share their input in a time and manner that’s convenient to them.”

Residents can register for the virtual workshops online. The walking workshops will each be approximately 1.5 miles to observe challenges and opportunities for improvement firsthand.

Centennial United Methodist Church Hosts National Night Out Event

Hawaiian music, corn hole tossing, and visits from police officers and elected officials took place at a National Night Out on Tuesday August 3rd. Centennial United Methodist Church hosted the event in their grassy and tree-shaded courtyard at the corner of Freeport Blvd. and Murieta Way. Organizers encouraged both neighbors and church members to mingle and visit information booths about the local food bank and the church and get bites of watermelon, ice cream and cookies. A “passport” noting a visit to all the arranged stops merited a goody bag upon departing the event.

“This was our first National Night Out, and we hope to do it again,” said Gerlene Kwan, who is part of the outreach team at the Church. “It gives a sense of community, getting to know each other and helping improve the community” She estimates there were 60-70 people who came out between 6:00 to 8:00pm on that 100-degree evening.

Three police officers from the local station at Franklin Blvd. near Fruitridge Blvd. paid a visit and mingled with the crowd who were enjoying snacks and the sounds of KaBang, a ukulele & guitar quartet.

City Council Member Jay Schenirer (District 5) and County Representative Patrick Kennedy were on hand with staff members to give updates on district happenings and answer residents’ questions.

  • Hollywood Park Is Getting a Mural!

Hollywood Park Is Getting a Mural!

The Sacramento Office of Arts + Culture recently launched a new citywide mural program, bringing community murals to each council district in the city. Thanks in large part to building owners Beilei Zhang and Amy Chan, and the persistence of Hollywood Park resident Erin McSlavkin, the mural for District 5 will be right here in Hollywood Park!

“This pilot program came directly out of discussions with the community when creating the City’s Creative Edge plan and Cultural Equity plan around infusing arts and culture into our neighborhoods and city council districts in Sacramento,” said Donald Gensler, the City’s public art project manager. “This is an exciting opportunity to bring community and artist collaborations to each district.”

neighbors meet to hear from the mural artist
Hollywood Park neighbors meet the artists and share ideas at the Community Input Meeting at the mural site.

The new mural will be going up on the big white wall at 4611 Freeport, and is set to be completed by the end of 2021. The incredible team of artists selected for our site – Jaya King (lead), Nicole Keith, Uli Smith, and Amy Zin Zhang, are already hard at work, and hosted the first Community Input Meeting at the mural site on 7/27 with an incredible turnout from the neighborhood. They’ll also be planning a Community Paint Day (date TBD), for Hollywood Park neighbors to show up and help paint.

Lead artist Jaya King said, “I’m thrilled to be working with the Hollywood Park neighborhood for our District 5 mural. Being able to connect with members of the community is an integral part of this project. Getting to know everyone, hearing their stories, and laughing alongside them will help to shape the design I’m diving into. I have an amazing team and we’re chomping at the bit to begin painting!”

  • President’s Letter – Fall 2021

Hello to all Hollywood Park and Carlton Tract residents! I can’t believe Hollywood Park is getting a mural through a City of Sacramento program. It is amazing. See the article in this newsletter to for all the details. Also, to meet the artist and voice your ideas, please attend the HPNA September Community Meeting on Wednesday September the 15th. The Board is working on meeting in person, but I’m sure you are all aware the situation keeps changing, so stay tuned and check in with the website (hollywoodpark95822.org) for current information about all HPNA events…like the Mega Yard Sale coming up on Saturday October 2nd! And the HPNA Board Member election in December! See the notice in this issue of the Herald on how to get elected to our Board in this newsletter.

As usual, there is definitely more that needs to be done than there are Board members to do it. We are always looking for help. If you have a skill or can provide assistance, please sent us an email (info@hollywoodpark95822.org). I wish everyone health and safety. I’ll see you all walking and biking around!

    Your HPNA President,

    Jeff Lidicker
